Wharepuke

Rated: one doves

Wharepuke translates as “house on the hill”. We found this hidden taonga (treasure) in the heart of Northland’s food basket - ‘Kerikeri’.

Providing five stylish one bedroom self catering eco cottages, award winning cafe, art gallery and print studio nestled in five acres of subtropical garden; awarded "Garden of Significance".

Enjoy the seven minutes walk to historic Stone Store basin or drive 1km to thriving Kerikeri village with cafes, restaurants, arts/crafts and boutique shops galore.

If you want to eat close to home visit ‘Food at Wharepuke’, a fully licensed Cafe and Restaurant offering Thai inspired and Modern European Cuisine and Judged ‘Northland Cafe of the Year 2011’ and winner of ‘Innovative Chef of the Year 2012’ award. The café is accessible and has accessible toilet facilities.

After you have eaten you could either head back to your cottage for a nap or there’s the art centre to explore, where there are New Zealand and International artists working in printmaking, painting, ceramics, sculpture, installation and video.  You might also like to take a course with Fine Art Print maker Mark Graver at his non-toxic print studio at Wharepuke.

A great place to stay and play, please phone ahead to discuss your requirements.

Accessible Information

There are five stylish self-catering, eco cottages nestled amongst five hectares of New Zealand’s most exquisite award winning sub-tropical gardens, home also to at least 30 bird species.

One chalet is accessible having a wooden ramp with a non-slip surface and reasonable gradient with handrails; this ramp leads onto a wooden deck with great garden views.  Access into the cottage is level and the accomodation is spacious making for ease of mobility if you use a wheelchair.  It includes a large roll-in shower with a sturdy plastic chair, a grab rail is not present.  The toilet facilites are located within the same room and does include an L-shaped grab rail. Please note that while the hand basin is lovely it may be difficult for some due to its design and height.

The other four chalets offer varying degrees of access but are all equally well appointed with the same spacious layout and roll-in showers. The toilet facilities however are not accessible as they are not positioned beside a wall with a grab rail.  The operators state however that a wheelchair user has utilised one of these cottages due to its secluded position.

Access around the gardens is by means of loose gravel pathways which are reasonably wheelchair accessible but do have slopes of varying degrees.

Overall Wharepuke provides a reasonable level of access however if you have difficulty with mobility including walking on irregular surfaces you may like to have support to access this beautiful environment.
